1. You will be assigned to a team of 4.
2. Complete the preassessment with your group. You will be graded on well-thought out answers and the group's ability to work together.
3. After discussing the task with your team, you will need to pick a specialist role to play in the construction of this building.
There is the geologist, someone who studies the composition of the earth and the locations of plate boundaries; the seismologist, someone who studies earthquakes; the architect, someone who designs buildings; and the engineer, someone who is involved in the structural design and safety of a building.
4. As a specialist you will investigate information with the same specialist from the other teams. For example the seismologist will investigate data with the other seismologists. See the links below for further information about each specialist and what each needs to cover.
5. Each specialist will need to investigate information, organize data, and summarize the information. Posting information on padlet or a google doc for your group can be helpful.
6. Return to your original team and discuss each specialists findings.
7. Working together as a group using the information you have gained decide on the construction of your building.
8. The architect will draw the building on paper.
9. The engineer will label the special features included to withstand an earthquake.
10. As a group write out a paragraph explaining the earthquake history for your area and the reason for the design you chose. Include an explanation of the features you included and how the features you have included will help withstand an earthquake.
Modifications should be made according to students ability. Such as creating the building drawing with engineering features only.
